The Dance of the Dog

Story and Paintings oil/canvas 8"x10" 2006© by Jon Schooler

A dog was dancing along in search of that dog of superior specialness when the wind started blowing and the rain was raining sideways and pretty soon it turned into a hurricane. After the hurricane the flood waters rose inundating the city of New Orleans and the dog found himself way way far away wallowing in confounding disorientation. What a flood, life was chaotic, confusing, and all the stuff only survivors understand or not understand but are still overwhelmed by. First the dog was depressed, coming out of shock. Second the self pity took over for a while. Third, anger emerged, and finally, the unrelenting insurmountable frustration. Exhausted, pummeled to a pulp, the dog just let go. Once the dog let go he slept. When he awoke he was able to regroup, focus on the situation at hand, getting back to the pack. The dog sniffed the air and smelled the unmistakable putrid disaster oder, the one that smells like ass, and set out in the direction of the wrecking stench toward home. Along the way the dog met a wise old dog. This wise old dog told him he would easily find his way back to his pack if he did the dance of the dog. So, he asked the wise old dog, "What is the dance of the dog?" The wise old dog explained,"The dance of the dog is a secret." A secret, a secret, thought the dog and he was soon moving again and thinking, the dance of the dog.
